چکیده

In this Chapter, we have characterized the bus traffic generated by the SPECweb96 benchmark in a four-processor SMP system with NT/4 operating system. We observe that the benchmark is very network intensive, in terms of computation and bandwidth consumption. The study shows that the transactions across the four processors are well balanced and do not have any long-range dependencies. There is a substantial amount of locking contention in the benchmark as is reflected by a large number of hit-modified transactions. In addition, a significant amount of spatial locality exists in the bus transactions that can be exploited through efficient cache organization. The inferences from this study can be used for designing efficient Internet servers.

Server Capacity Planning for Web Traffic Workload

ÐThe goal of this paper is to provide a methodology for determining bandwidth requirements for various hardware components of a World Wide Web server. The paper assumes a traditional symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) architecture for the web-server, although the same analysis applies to an SMP node in a cluster. The paper derives formulae for bandwidth demands for memory, processor data bus, netwo...

Transport Layer Security: How Much Does It Really Cost?

The last couple of years has seen a growing momentum towards using the Internet for conducting business. One of the key enablers for business applications is the ability to setup secure channels across the internet. The Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol provides this capability and it is the most widely used transport layer security protocol. In this paper we investigate the performance of SS...

Session Based Admission Control: a Mechanism for Web QoS

Evaluation of web server performance generally focuses on achievable throughput and latency for request-based type of workload as a function of traffic load. SpecWeb96 benchmark is an industry standard for measuring Web Servers performance. It is based on generating HTTP requests to retrieve different length files accordingly to a particular distribution. The server performance (throughput) is ...

An Algorithm for the Classification of Coherence Related Overhead in Shared-Bus Shared-Memory Multiprocessors

This paper describes an algorithm for the classification of coherence overhead in shared-bus shared-memory multiprocessors. This algorithm is applicable to Write Update, Write Invalidate and Hybrid protocols and models the effect of finite size (real) cache. It differs from previous classifications because it classifies any sources of coherence overhead, i.e. invalidation miss, invalidate and w...

BAT: Performance-Driven Crosstalk Mitigation Based on Bus-Grouping Asynchronous Transmission

Crosstalk delay within an on-chip bus can induces a severe transmission performance penalty. Bus-grouping Asynchronous Transmission (BAT) scheme is proposed to mitigate the performance degradation. Furthermore, considering the distinct spatial locality of transition distribution on some types of buses, we use the locality to optimize the BAT. In terms of the implementation, we propose the Diffe...
